Port Gate Albern

BASIC  PROJECT  DATA

Project ID: PA1A168

Project website: https://www.hafen-wien.com/en/press/projects

NEED  AND  ADDED  VALUE  FOR  THE  DANUBE  REGION  STRATEGY

The Action is part of a Global Project which aims to secure Vienna’s position as a multimodal logistics centre and to reliably provide the necessary undisrupted handling facilities. Constructing the floodgate at the port of Albern is the final measure of implementing effective flood protection in the Vienna Danube ports of Freudenau, Lobau and Albern.

This will increase the port operations’ reliability and safety in the event of floods. The port of Vienna-Albern is connected to the core rail and road network and currently experiences operational disruptions and infrastructure damages during high-water seasons.

OBJECTIVE(S)  OF  THE  PROJECT

This flood protection project is an important step towards further enhancing the value of the port of Vienna as a logistics hub, because in future it will enable undisturbed goods handling in the port of Albern even during floods. Not only the Port of Vienna itself benefits from the flood protection gate, but also the around 20 companies with around 100 employees who have settled in the port of Albern.

The port of Albern is the third major port facility in Vienna, alongside the port of Freudenau and the Lobau oil port. It is one of the most important locations for grain handling in eastern Austria. There are five large granaries with a total capacity of 90,000 tons on the site. The heavy goods center for high and heavy loads (up to 450 tons) is also located in the port of Albern. In addition to grain, building materials, agricultural products and steel products are also handled here.

CONDUCTED  AND  PLANNED  PROJECT  ACTIVITIES

This Action covers several main structural measures for flood protection including the construction of the port floodgate, the installation of a pumping station and their connection to the existing flood protection dams. The floodgate will be a sliding gate (30 m long, 14.50 m high and 2.50 m thick).

In the event of floods, it will seal off the outer port on the Danube side from the inner port of Albern, while the pumping station will prevent the port water level from rising after the gate closes.
