NEED AND ADDED VALUE FOR THE DANUBE REGION STRATEGY
The increase of the waterway traffic on the Danube river and port Vukovar sets demands for building a bigger winter shelter on the wider area of Vukovar. A winter shelter is a natural or artificial body of water in the waterways which is equipped and trained to provide safe shelter, especially in conditions of ice on the waterway.
The existing natural winter shelter in Opatovac is the only winter shelter on the Danube river in the Republic of Croatia. Its capacity (max. 14 vessels) and the conditions it is offering do not satisfy real needs. According to the opinion of the Vukovar Port Authority on the necessity of a winter shelter, it is outlined that in the case of ice, it is necessary to store 25 vessels in transit and 10 vessels that are in the port at that time in a winter shelter. According to that, the capacity of the winter shelter should be 35 vessels.
The new winter shelter would be situated in Opatovac, in a branch of the Danube, on the east side of the INA dock for loading. The new winter quarters would be developed west of the areas mentioned ports. Inside of that area, according to the developed solution, it will be possible to store 23 standard vessels with the dimensions 76,5m x 11,4m.
The area of the new winter shelter is designed in a way that there will be a boat dock for vessels on the right side of the branch. The north side of the branch would be used for the formation of the access of the fairway and as turning spot. The winter shelter in Opatovac would be of great importance for the Republic of Croatia because it will consist not only of the winter shelter for vessels on Danube but also of a petroleum storage-loading terminal and a ship repair terminal to maintain the fleet. Given the dimensions there is enough room for all three functions and there will be no negative impact on the environment.
OBJECTIVE(S) OF THE PROJECT
The main objective of the project is to increase river transport on the Danube and in the port Vukovar and also to protect all vessels in transit and the vessels in the port in case of occurrence of ice. The winter shelter will also be of great help for the development of nautical tourism.
PLANNED PROJECT ACTIVITIES
The construction of a winter shelter for vessels includes the construction of bank structures, the construction of an additional building and the organization of local waters. The winter shelter will be equipped with all necessary infrastructures. The predicted length of revetment is approximately 700 m. In the shelter accommodation for 23 ships of a standard size of 76.5 x 11.4 m will be provided.
