The navigation lock at the Serbian side of the dam at Đerdap 1 (river-km 943) has been in operation for about 40 years and the lock at the Serbian side of the dam at Đerdap 2 (river-km 863) for about 25 years. The structural, mechanical and electric installations which are necessary for locks operation are in poor condition. The Iron Gate I navigational lock (Đerdap 1) will be rehabilitated and upgraded within the next years.

GREEN DANUBE – Integrated transnational policies and practical solutions for an environmentally-friendly Inland Water Transport system in the Danube region
GREEN DANUBE acted as a policy driver for a stronger multilevel cooperation to advance the modernisation of the Danube fleet.
Within the conducted project several works were executed for the rehabilitation and modernization of port infrastructure, including a vertical quay and the modernisation of sloped quays.
After the first phase, which was completed in 2016, the second phase comprises of further works for the rehabilitation and modernization of port infrastructure. These include construction works at quays and the establishment of utilities networks.
Works planned for the rehabilitation and modernization of port infrastructure in Calafat port mainly comprise of the Rehabilitation and adaption of a quays.
Work planned for the rehabilitation and modernization of the infrastructure of Cernavoda port includes measures in the commercial and the passenger port. Beside others, several quays will be rehabilitated and a concrete platform will be modernized.
The project at Drobeta Turnu Severin Port aims to modernize the port´s infrastructure by hydro-technical construction works to rehabilitate the vertical quays and construct new quays in the commercial and passenger sectors of the port.
The port infrastructure of Giurgiu port will be modernized from 2018 until 2020. The works to be executed within the investment project shall result in the reinforcement of stone-lined wharves and the mole.
The project foresees modernization of Moldova Veche port infrastructure in the commercial and touristic port sector.
